Do you use OEM? If so, use that repository database as RMAN's catalog.

Do you use 8i? Then a repository is more or less required.

Do you use 9i? Then unless you're using OEM (in which case, see above) I wouldn't necessarily want to use a catalog. Unless I had complex backup requirements, involving the use of incrementals and cumulatives, backups to be kept for defined lengths of times, and quite a few targets to be concerned with. If I had all those things, then I would use a catalog. If I had a two or three targets, one DBA, and a 'back it all up nightly' strategy, and 9i, I wouldn't use a catalog.
