Thanks for the suggestions.
I did finally manage to get the database open with 7.3.3 of the software.
It wasn't as hard as I thought ... At first it wouldn't open since it carped about the version number in the controlfiles, but in desperation I did a manual recreate of the controlfiles from the files in the directories in question, then opened with compatible = 7.3.3 and miraculously it let me in.
