With 8.1.7 you can use the
alter session set tracefile_identifier = 'something'; call. This closes the old tracefile properly and you can safely delete it. You can then set the tracefile identifier back to null to re-open the new one if you want, but it's much easier to find trace files with useful bits in their names. Also you can do this sort of thing:
alter session set sql_trace = true;
alter session set tracefile_identifier = 'part1';
do some work
alter session set tracefile_identifier = 'part2';
do some work
alter session set tracefile_identifier = 'part3';
exit
and get three separate trace files with particular bits
of the session in them.
This doesn't work with MTS (shared servers)
