You say Wintell is out, but I think you should seriously consider Linux.

We have used HP and Sun a lot.

HP use to be our primary choice at one site and it is now Sun.

At another site HP is still the primary choice, but they are considering Linux for new hardware next year.

We will probably all eventually (next 1-3 years) switch to Linux.

In general, I think HP (most of the time) has the fastest CPUs, but they also cost more than Suns.

We have good and bad experiences with both Sun and HPs. Some of the bad experiences were recent with both and some were not recent (7 years ago) .
