My experience 3 years ago, so this could have changed since then...

When I looked 3 years ago into 32-bit vs. 64-bit Oracle on Sun Solaris for 8i, everyone I talked to gave a consistent answer.

Anyway, we went with 32-bit Oracle on 64-bit Solaris.

What I found:

  1. Oracle 64-bit patches are usually released around 3 months (or more) later than 32-bit.
  2. Oracle 64-bit does not give better performance, except indirectly a large SGA means more buffering which might help performance.
  3. Oracle 64-bit is a good choice for large databases that require large SGA memory allocations or large number user sessions.
  4. Exporting a large file is easier with a 64-bit OS, even if Oracle is 32-bit. See document on export considerations at URL: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76955/ch01.htm#45782

Anyway, I think just about everyone agreed running the 64-bit version of Solaris was a good idea.
