How big is the database? I've got a 5TB database that I would never dream of upgrading with export/import. I just can't afford the downtime. And the OP never inidicated how big the database is so we just don't know enough to determine that exp/imp is even acceptable.

Personally, I've only had a few minor glitches in the manual upgrade and one major glitch. The minor glitches where not that difficult to sort out and I've been happy with every one of those that I've upgraded manually, without exp/imp.

On the other hand. I did have one manual upgrade that caused my instance to start throwing ORA-7445 errors with anonymous PL/SQL blocks. And my SYS schema had over 1300 invalid objects. After more than a week with Oracle Support and not getting anywhere solving the problem, it was easier to restore the 8i version from a backup, perform a full export, drop the db and recreate it as a 9i db, and then do a full import. But the database was only 2-3GB in size. So importing was not a long running process. To me, this was a rare situation which in now way will stop me from manual upgrades in the future.

Cheers,
Brian
