Applying of Redo Logs

Hello,
 I have received conflicting information whether or not redo logs can be applied from our production database, 8.1.7.4 UTF8, to our staging database, 8.1.7.4 USASCII7. The reason for this is due to a Siebel upgrade while allowing production to continue since downtime cannot be longer than a few hours. So I was planning on doing something like this:

Export Production

Import into staging

upgrade staging

and then applying logs from production

shut down production

startup up on staging and switch boxes
