Well, that much is true, but I'm not so sure about the rest.

The export file isn't 'text and binary'. It is binary, and needs to be copied 'as is'.

Different versions are fine. Exporting from a lower version to a higher version: no issues.
Exporting from a higher version to a lower version may need a set of views created (script is catexpvvv.sql in source), and the export created with the exp executable from the lower version. Again, depends on version. This is all well documented.

To OP: Yes, this is the way to go. This is precisely why Oracle invented exp and imp.
