I don't think this is exactly sufficient information, especially as I never ran into this issue myself. One would need to know, whether you have a catalog database and the *exact* backup and the exact restore script. My experience is on the contrary, if you don't issue a set until statement prior to restore, RMAN will always perform a full restore/recover using the online control files.
I have never seen any RMAN sites, and as far as I know the documentation is sufficient (no I don't want to mention Howard Rogers backup course here, in order to prevent flames with respect to the question whether he is the legal author)
