What parts are different/missing?

The Personal is intended to be a single developer's copy of Enterprise - it even makes that clear in the Family document at http://otn.oracle.com/products/oracle9i/pdf/9idb_rel2_prod_fam.pdf - following quoted from last bullet point on page 2 ...

"Oracle9i Database Personal Edition supports single user development and deployment that require full compatibility with Oracle9i Standard Edition and Oracle9i Enterprise Edition. By bringing the award-winning functionality of Oracle9i Database to the personal workstation, Oracle offers a database that combines the power of the world’s most popular database with the ease of use and simplicity you would expect in a desktop product."

In fact, I highly recommend considering Personal - if the tech tracks are not good enough (either downloaded or cd) because a person wants a full license and potentially wants a reasonably priced support contract to access metalink. Please do re-read the license agreement on the Tech Track (free download) version. There are some restrictions that might make a person think twice.

For what Amy wants, Personal is IMHO the right choice, regardless of source.

perhaps you were thinking of Oracle Lite? In whch case I agree.

Kudos for the initiative. And forgive us in this group - there have been so many people asking for solutions because they (obviously) refuse to read that we, as a group of 'professionals' have become very grumpy in virtually all responses.

To get help from us, please keep reminding us that you are looking in the docco - perhaps by asking where to look.

For the technical side - Howard has very good advice in his post. The only thing I would add is to look at & get comfortable with the Oracle Enterprise Manager. Over the past 3 years, Oracle has given that a lot of emphasis as the preferred way of managing the environment. It does add a lot of load to your machine, but is can - once your familiar - help you see & understand what the beast is doing. Received on Sat May 17 2003 - 21:31:37 CDT
