No. I suggest cpio is more frequently used and is simpler than tar. But I disagree that this is simpler than Oracle's solution.

If the command line version of RMAN does not suit you, then you need to perform all the supporting functions manually like, but not limited to, shutdown & restart.

Regardless of the method used - please ensure the following:

  1. the backup procedure is good, but performaing at least 1 restore
  2. stop the database before backing up
