Ideally the Oracle_Home will provide total isolation between the
executables and the RSFs for each version. Once you have confirmed that
the active instances and processes are all using the new OracleHome you can
safely remove the old OracleHome.
That said, confirming that everything is using the new OracleHome may not be quite that easy. You might find that programs or even the OS has reference to the old OracleHome, either hard coded or in environment variables. In a Microsoft environment, you may end up with references in the registry, some of which are safe and others are not.
My personal method is - rename the top level directory for the OracleHome that will be removed. Listen carefully for screams. If the screams are not too loud, and do not come from the boss' office after 1-2 weeks, then (after restoring the name) take a final backup, un-install using the Oracle installer and finally delete.
