There is no way to really work with Oracle except by learning its needs.This is not Access or SqlServer.

Register with Technet http://technet.oracle.com ( its free)
Study...
As to your specific question:
There can be multiple ORACLE_HOMES depending on the Tools and versions of Oracle stuff you install
on one machine( I have 3 on my PC)...
The ORACLE_HOME value is used by Oracle to locate many of its components ( like error messages, etc)
