rather do it this way, if that's OK. Very interested in everyone's opinions. FAQ's are tremendously useful (to me) when they are very specific to the group involved. Rather than concentrating on general Usenet stuff. Most of my comments go with that view.

More to do with general Usenet stuff than Oracle specifically?

Really goes together with 6.

Yup. Goody.

Spoilsport! Oh darn: OK, then! Richard won't be happy... But I draw the line at the pure malts! Anyone mentioning those gets a reply. :D

Hmmm, disagree. Quite possible. If not enough info is given. Nothing wrong with asking for clarification.

Yes. But it might put the person on the right track of where to look.

Yes. So, let's be careful. One thing I do every once in a while (probably not often enough!) is to re-read what I wrote a coupla times. 9 out of 10, there is some better way of saying things without offending or sounding pompous. And that shows over time in google. I'd recommend it to everyone.

Hmmmmmmmyess. Take the time to smell the rowses!

Not quite. Although I've been associated with Oracle since it started in Australia and been working with the product since 84, nowadays I do more application and database design than DBA stuff.

I'll chip-in where I feel it's needed or I can help but I'd rather bow the "gut" bits to Steve, Jonathan, yourself, Thomas, Richard and so many others here. You folks spend a lot more time with that stuff than I do.

I still mentor DBAs and do DBA work every now and then. It's fun! But the bulk of my work is now slightly different. Most of my time is spent trying to figure out ways of making new designs (Java or otherwise) and new apps work with Oracle half decently. And vicky-the-versa. And getting systems properly configured. Still very technical, but not as much "into the guts". Keep me for bashing-in the "architects".

I'll let someone else have fun with block dumps. Only use them nowadays when results don't match my expectations and the numbers in my spreadsheets go South. ;)

As for the mistakes: the day anyone here feels constrained to point out what they think is a mistake, doesn't matter from who, is the day this place gets boring! We all make them. NO exceptions. No qualms whatsoever. That should be a separate point, BTW.

YEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!! And I can prove it! :) And where the heck is me old mate Leonie Roberts??? God only knows I need to discuss so much stuff with her...

Can I just beat up DB2 every now and then? I promise I'll be gentle. <not!>

Yes. That's good advice.

Hmmmm. OK. I can see your point.

Good one!. Intend to. Been doing that for the last I don't know how many years. :D
