Redo Log Archive grows and grows....

Hi André,

• you can archive your archived logs to tape and then delete them from the disc area.
• when you next take a cold backup of the database, you won't be needing any of the archivelogs up until that time. (Unless you intend to restore to a previous backup and roll forward to a point in time before that cold backup.
• you need to keep all archivelogs from the start point of any hot backups you have carried out. And by this I mean, if you have a lareg database that you hot backup over the course of a couple of nights, then you'll need all the archived logs back to the first part of the hot backup.
• if you restore from an exp dump, then your archive logs will be useless because there is no guarantee that the rows will be put back into their original file/block/row etc.

Hi,

  I am running an Oracle9i server with an instance in archive log mode. Now
my archive grows and grows and at some stage will reach the hard disk limits... what can I do ?

  Under which circumstances can I delete part of the archive ? And how ? Do
I just delete the files or will this mess up the instance's archive and statistics information ? Is there a tool to maintain the archive ?
