It is indeed possible to connect using the scenario you mention. Personally, I've got a connection with this method using Linux and a colleague has done so using another Unix platform. Provided you have the necessary Heterogeneous Services installed on your Oracle Client/Server you can connect using ODBC to your SQL Server database.
We provide a TDS driver for connecting to your SQLServer database and this simply gets mapped into your HS setup. A trial version can be downloaded from www.openlinksw.com or www.openlinksw.co.uk
We do have branches of BT, recent acquisitions from BT Ignite spring to mind, who use our Drivers.
