It's not simply a matter of recentness. The new (>7.2) "SuSE Linux x.y" editions will *never* be supported by Oracle. If you are looking for a certified platform you have to buy the more expensive "SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)" product.

8.1 is OK for developing, if you succeed to install Oracle on it :) You can find useful tips on the http://www.suse.com/oracle page or in the suse-oracle mailing list.
