I myself have always used dbassist to create the database inhouse for
dev work.
I am now running into a problem where I have no way to pop up a GUI due to the server is in a datacenter. On your note, the client is requesting 8.1.7 due to project restrictions.
I'm not a full blown DBA but can you run 9 and put it into some sort of 8.1.7 mode, so that the project environment wouldn't be effected.
Anyhow, my first problem is creating the db. I think this message might help and also ran into some helpful scripts from a few websites.
