some *sql*plus* help *can* be stored in the instance, provided one does read post-installation steps and run the helpins procedure. This will *NOT* install a full SQL reference as that is way too big. But that is no problem as all doco is online at http://tahiti.oracle.com, which does include the sql*plus reference manual.
