Since he's running on a Pentium III, the question is moot.
(We know he's running on a Pentium III (a) because he reports 8i installations are fine and (b) because in another reply in this thread he explicitly said so).
The original Pentium 4 bug arose because the file symcjit.dll incorrectly reported the processor, since it was developed before the Pentium 4 became widely available. I suppose it is possible that an installation of 8i might leave that flawed version of the file in your path somewhere, and thus stuff up later installations. But the version of the file actually supplied with 9i works fine.
In any case, a quick file search through an 8i installation shows no evidence of such a file actually being transferred to hard disk by installing: it stays on the installation media, being only needed to make the installer itself work.
