Re: Problem Installing 8.1.6 on SuSe Linux 8.1

   Ok, installing Oracle on Linux seems to be a regular topic. Have you nipped over to www.suse.com and checked out the Oracle compatibility matrix??? First off, 8.1.6 is not supported on SuSE 8.x and Oracle's stance is that you should be running 9i but will support you if you choose to run 8.1.7.4.

  That aside, make sure you follow the preinstallation instructions that come in the Oracle on Linux installation manual supplied by Oracle. Grab orarun8i.rpm from SuSE and install that - it provides most of the basic setup requirements for SuSE to run Oracle.

  Before running the installer make sure your environment variables are set, for example:

        umask 007
        export ORACLE_BASE=/opt/oracle
        export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.6
        export ORACLE_SID=ORCL

The most important thing is to issue an:

    unset LANG

Usually, this is enough as to get the installer running. I know it's a bit pedantic but it **REALLY** pays to RTFM when it comes to installing Oracle!!!
