Dave,
If this was several week before September 1, 2002 my answer would be to go with Oracle 8i and then take the 9i new features exam for your 9i certification. Being an OCP 8i (or having passed an 9i exam) before 9/1/2002, excluded you from the Oracle education requirement for 9i.
Well, it is after 9/1/2002, so here are your choices - as I see them.
From a long term perspective, 9i is the way to go.
From the perspective "I want to get a job and an OCP will help me," 8i has the advantage of not having to pay for an Oracle class. ON THE OTHER HAND, if you are going to need to take one or more Oracle class to pass the OCP, 9i is the only way to go.
As for myself, the class announcement got me off my butt. I had been putting off getting my OCP (since release 7). When I read about the class requirement, I took the 5 Oracle 8i exams, got my OCP 8i before 9/1/2002. (The other option would have been to take one of the 9i exams before 9/1/2002.)
I decided on getting my 8i (instead of taking an 9i exam) OCP because most job postings are for clients at 8i and below. In fact, many of my clients have no interest in 9i, till it is older (to them upgrading means 8.1.7.4).
