The actual reason is still unsolved but when Oracle was patched from 8.1.7.0
to 8.1.7.4 (platform is Solaris) all problems with queries disappeared.
Production staff was relieved, but still, this is too serious to be "just"
an Oracle bug, so I keep seeing forward the actual reason and post a message
when I find it out. Anyway because this problem has been so peculiar I
thought I let you know about this also.
