I am a new with oracle and
I recently installed a 8.1.7 on a linux box.

It seems that everything runs well. I can connect to oracle via my local network, I can create tables insert delete a.s.o...

My problem is with sqlplus on my lnux box. Why can I use it only as oracle user? How can I add other users?

More - why can I connect to my database using SYS as SYSDBA and when I want to issue a shutdown I get a 'insufficient privileges'?

SQL*Plus: Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production on Fri Nov 8 19:01:00 2002 (c) Copyright 2000 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.

SQL> conn sys as sysdba
Enter password:
Connected.
SQL> shutdown
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
SQL>

Thanks for your replies
