the 'best' method depaends upon you really, however, I tend to do my own migrations between versions using a full export and import. This way I can easily rearrange tablespaces etc to suit how I want it to be - say I need to remove space or add it etc. This method means I have to have both databases present on the server at the same time - but so far that has not been a problem.
The migration assistant does the updates in place in the old 805 database - so you better have a full backup just in case.
On the other hand, do you have a problem upgrading to 817 or 9i because 806 is unsupported now.
