You are required to download all three CDs.

Well, what I mean to say is that if you download the three files for the complete Enterprise Edition install, and decide to use that to install just the client, it does indeed prompt for the supply of each and every CD (though, from memory, disk 2 is in the drive for just a few seconds before the prompt for disk 3 appears).

However, and I confess to not checking the Linux downloads recently, there is (for Windows, at any rate) a spearate client-only download. You might prefer to download just that, since it is considerably smaller than the full Enterprise Edition stuff.
