I liked your idea. You should asked the guy what he have done and ask him what he is familar, and see how much he understands the topic he said he has experience. Database is such a huge object, each person has different experience, it is very unfair to judge people just by a few questions. He does not have to know anything you pick ramdomly from a DBA manual. But he should know the things that he has been working.

We interviewed a guy recently.
First I asked him whether he has experience with transportable tablespace. He said he does not. I stopped ask him.

Then I asked him does he use local managed tablespace. he said yes, then I asked him when you created LMT, there is two options, AutoAllocate and uniform size, what is the difference between them?

Then I asked him whether he has done transfering a regular table into a partitioned table, he said yes. In 9i, he said, you can use dbms_redef. Describe the steps you did it, what did you change your indexes script so that it can be created on a partitioned table? Sometime the indexes creation is so slow, how do you speed it up? Do you know what is happening behind scence when you are using dbms_redef? What will you do if the process failed in the middle of redef?

I asked him whether he has done some performance tuning? He said yes, where would you start if somebody complains the database is slow?
