Hi Cynic (not your real name methinks !)
If all you want is the database, then assuming you are running on Winows
(CreateMutex was a bit of a clue - but I could be wrong), then you will
need to get into control panael and services somehow and set all the
services called Oracle* to manual startup and stopped for now. One of
these will be Oracle*HTTP and that should shut it down - alternatively,
a reboot may well be in order.
Next up, set oracleServiceSID and Oracle*Listener to manual/automatic
(as you desire) and started. That gets you a listener and a database
service running.
On my own 650 Mhz P2 with 256 MB I have the service and listener running in auto startup mode, and performance has not dropped off too much - but if I need all the power I can wring out of this beast, I just shut them down until I need them again.
