Hi Mike,
OK seriously, this is what I think.
The beauty about people is that we are all different. And thank goodness (can you imagine a world of Howard Rogers, crikey !!) And when communicating in a forum such as this, these differences come out and personalities start to emerge.
Now people simply communicate differently. Some are very direct, some are matter of fact, some are humorous, some are serious, some are long winded, some are short winded, some are factual, some are fanciful, some like to make points about the some old questions, some like to ignore the same old questions, some like to stick to the subject matter at hand, some like to mention David Bowie at every opportunity, etc. etc.
And communication is a two way thing. I might write a post that I personally consider to be short, factual and serious but how it's perceived by others could be completely different. Others may view the same post and consider it rather long winded, fanciful, funny, stupid, rude, offensive, wrong, etc. etc. And as this forum communicates via the written language, not the clearest form of communication by any means, these different interpretations are more likely.
Lastly, the other somewhat sad thing about people is that there are always going to be differences and there are always going to be people who dislike other people. It's in our nature. Some are more tolerant and amiable than others but even the most friendly, courteous and helpful person is going to be disliked by some. Just the way it is.
I honestly believe the vast majority of people in the vast majority of instances are helpful and positive in these NGs. But that's my perception, others may see it differently.
Personally, I believe my helpfulness hit rate currently sits at 73.47%. I little lower than ideal, but easily attributed to "lack of memory".
Cheers
