Check the Oracle Reference Guide:
a. on your On-line documentation CD-ROM shipped with every software distribution
b. tahiti.oracle.com
In my opinion the doc set in HTML or Acrobat format (whatever you prefere) should be on you harddisk and just one mouseclick away. For acrobat you only have to click index.pdf and you can browse the entire set.

In Chapter 3 (V8.1.7 doc set) the V$-views are described. Read about V$SORT_USAGE and V$SORT_SEGMENT.

| My temporary tablespace will grow dramatically (30 to 40 gig) for a short
| period (5 minutes) and then shrink back down to its normal size (5 gig).
I
| can only determine that the segments that are responsible for the growth
are
| named "SYS.4.844802" and similar.
|
| I would like to determine what user is causing the temp segment growth.
Is
| there a way of tracing the name of the temp segment back to a process
| id/user?
|
| Cheers,
| Clueless.
