To be fair to Chuck, 8i is frequently spoken of as 'version 8' -largely on the grounds that, by not altering the first versioning number (the '8.' bit), Oracle themselves made it quite clear that it *was* a version 8 database.
Myself, I always draw a distinction between "8.0" and "8i", or "8.0" and "8.1". But hourses and courses, I guess.
