Have you heard the one about the philosopher who gave a presentation on linguistics to the Royal Society on the use of the double negative. After three hours he got to the conclusion, which was: "After 11 years spent examining 73 different languages, I have come to the conclusion that the double negative as an affirmative is a universal linguistic construct - yet in no language is the double affirmative used as a negative ." And a voice calls out from the back of the hall "Yeah, yeah".
