If performance is what you're after, your best bet is to use RAW.
If your O/S and your port of Oracle supports direct I/O, then if you
are inclined to do regular files, the performance penalty isn't that
great (on writes).

As a side note, try use 'symbolic links' when you're building your
instance.  It'll give you the most flexibility by building a layer
of abstraction between the underlying filesystem and the instance.
