Bill,

          you will never make a worse move than to get 'application specific', your career will be severly limited thereafter. Learn oracle/unix and you will never look back. Think of how many applications that run on top of Oracle ? SAP, peoplesoft, baan, oracle financials etc. I used to be an application specific technical specialist (one of the above listed apps) and since leaving it and focusing on the core technologies ie OS and RDBMS, my knowledge and job satisfaction have tripled. There are also way more jobs for people with those skills.

Lets say you learn peoplesoft, and they go down the tubes in a years time, you will be back on this list asking the same sort of questions as soon as it becomes clear that no-one is buying or implementing it any more.

My tuppence worth.
