Did you try rebuilding the index that was in a unusable state? What happened? "but it did not work" does not give us a clue as to what happened...

Also, I'll advise you to apply all patches related to 8.1.7. The reason why the index became unusable could have to do with some bugs in 8.1.7 (Specifically the sqlldr with direct load option does this ... at least in 8.1.6.3)
