Have you tried /dev/rmt/0 then - note the extra slash before the zero. This is the correct name for my tape drive on HP-UX - again, you are on AIX which is IBM and therfore liable to be completely different :o)

In AIX, it gives you an error; /dev/rmt0 is considered as a file not a directory. So /dev/rmt0/something is wrong.
