Hi Daniel,
This may sound really obvious and unhelpful (so if it is forgive me) but I would strongly recommend a good thorough read of the Replication and the Replication API manuals (the second of which has a working example). Master to master replication is not an easy thing to set-up (for a simple soul like myself anyway) and a good understanding of the basic concepts is essential. It also discusses DB links and job events which the replication architecture is built around.
Once you achieve a level of confidence, I personally found OEM a really neat and relatively simple way of setting up a replicated environment. Many bag OEM (waiting ...., waiting .....) but for replication I found it most useful.
Still recommend getting the basics right first though.
