I don't think it's as bad as this. You can always recreate your controlfile via sql and perform any recovery you would have otherwise performed with the real deal. Sure, it's more complicated and therefore prone to error, so the backup you mentioned is good advice. But I wouldn't go so far as to say you're "stuck big time."
