An Oracle "Warning Standard"

Hi there,

I really need to find a way to get warnings on the health of a database into an external application that I'm developing for my final year dissertation project at university.

Does anyone know of a standard that Oracle conforms to that would let me use my application to monitor the health of the db?

Or does anyone know of anyway that this can be done??
