Proper way to use exp

I'm going to export an Oracle 8.0.5 database for the last time to be
imported into a new Oracle 8.1.7 system.  Can someone tell me what the
proper steps are to do a full export, without allowing any changes to
the system?  Not sure if pulling the network plug and doing a full
export with consistant=y is the right answer or not. (:
