Could it have something to do with db-server and client being in two different NT workgroups, with a PDC being around in the same network managing a domain that neither db-server nor client belong to?

I can't quite follow that. Control panel -> network has no "server" and no radio buttons on my W2K (db-server) or XP (client).

Paging space is fixed size.
