Migrating 7.3.4 to 9i

We need to move a single database from 7.3.4 to 9i. The problem is that all
the clients(1000+) are running sql*net 2.3. Now Oracle say using 2.3 to link
to 9i is not supported, but a quick test seems to demostrate that it works.
Has anybody ever run this configuration.
