You do not want to implement any form of raid in software. You want to buy raid hardware. Raid hardware is sold by storage manufacturers, such as EMC etc) and system manufacturers, such as SUN, Compaq etc. It is not at all time consuming to implement or maintain, though as Howard says the absolute optimum raid system will be expensive (relatively) in terms of disks.
