This is regularly done to death in these parts. You simply cannot use a
higher version of the executables to export a lower version database. You
*must* use the 8.0.4 (???!!!!Crikey!!) export executable to export the
database, and then use the 8.1.7 version of import to read the resulting
dump file.
As Margaret Thatcher once said (and why I'm in Australia right now) "there is no alternative".
