ISTR from my very first DBA training course that direct loads and insert /*+ APPEND */ insert data above the current high water mark for the table. If that's true then the rollback only needs to to know where the new data starts at in order to undo it. This may also explain why after an insert /*+ APPEND */ Oracle won't let you make any more changes until you have commited or rolledback first.
