If I understand you correctly ... using Oracle terminology you have one database with 30 schemas. If this all being hosted in SQL Server on one box then it can easily be moved to Oracle and hosted on one box. Are your DBAs Oracle DBAs or SQL Server DBAs?

Sounds to me like they see an opportunity and are trying to seize it.
