AIX - ESS - kernalized I/O?

Hi everybody.

I learned from one particular source that AIX accesses files on our IBM ESS as raw devices.
Therefore, AIX would be using kernalized asynchronous I/O (AIO) on these volumes.
Because of this, the AIO minservers and AIO maxservers would not play a role in the performance
of the I/O subsystem (at least not with regards to these ESS devices).

Unfortunally, I couldn't find any further information on this subject. What I would really like to
know if somebody can confirm this. As we are now using 150 (!) AIO servers (each eating
9MB of memory) on a particular node, we are currently wasting 1.3GB of memory. It would be really nice if this memory can be released back to the system.

Regards,

Falco Paul
