You are correct that people almost always favor the product that they know best and work with. But I wouldn't ding SQL Server based on your perceptions. Were I to ding it I would do so based on the fact that it has no substitute for multiversioning, its locking architecture is inadequate, and both its security and scalability insufficiet for systems involving large amounts of data (hundreds of gigabytes to terabytes) and large numbers of users (and large doesn't mean hundreds).

There is a reason why most of the people here in the Seattle-Redmond area that have left Microsoft and founded their own companies didn't choose SQL Server as their database: They know its limitations. And that includes some of the team members that developed SQL Server's engine.
