High tail it over to the SuSE website and grab the install support document for whichever version of Oracle you want to install. For example: http://www.suse.de/uk/support/oracle/db/817_73.html

Basic problems with 8.1.7:

• must declare the following environment variables otherwise universal installer will not run: ORACLE_BASE (e.g. export ORACLE_BASE=/opt/oracle) ORACLE_HOME (e.g. export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.7) ORACLE_SID (e.g. export ORACLE_SID=ORCL) ORA_NLS33 (e.g. export ORA_NLS33=$ORACLE_HOME/ocommon/nls/admin/data)
• make sure you issue an unset LANG (otherwise, this really screws up the Universal installer)
• SuSE 7.3 ships with the glibc 2.2x series which provokes another bug with 8i. Go to technet and download the glib stubs patch.
• SuSE 7.3 also ships with a buggy version of binutils (the linker is broken so when 8i tries to relink it fails). One solution is to download an earlier version and then force it to replace the buggy one (e.g. rpm -Uvh --force binutils.xx.xx.xx.x.rpm). Not sure, but I stumbled across a newer version of binutils (still beta) that purports to fix this linker issue. Must upgrade/downgrade binutils before installing oracle.

Other than that little lot - everything works fine ;)
