server falls over

I have a problem with my Sun Ultra 10 server hosting an Oracle 8.1.7
database. It seems that the server 'falls over', and I have to re-boot it to
get things going again. On cloaser examination, I find that the /var
partition is at 100% when this happens .
Any thoughts as to what causes /var to fill up ?
